Open Gear Lubricants

Smooth Operation, Maximum Efficiency

Reliable Lubrication for Large Open Gears

Large open gears on grinding and pulverizing mills operate under heavy loads and constant shock. These systems face harsh conditions from dust, debris, and abrasive materials such as cement, limestone, coal, or silica. To ensure reliability, it’s critical to use the right lubricant and the right method of application. Doing so protects gear surfaces, increases uptime, and often lowers gear set operating temperatures, lubricant consumption, energy use, and waste generation, resulting in a cleaner and safer work environment.

Modern open gear lubricants must be heavy-duty and high viscosity, containing extreme pressure and anti-wear additives. Products with a Timken OK load rating of 70 pounds or higher provide superior wear reduction and longer gear life.

Historically, open gear lubricants were asphaltic-based, with lower Timken ratings of 20 to 25 pounds, requiring large volumes to achieve protection. Newer lubricants use thickeners such as graphite, silica, or soap compounds, but many still cause excessive buildup, poor drainage, and housekeeping issues.

The Pyroshield® line of heavy-duty synthetic open gear lubricants solves these problems. These advanced formulations deliver strong film protection, reduced consumption, and cleaner operation, helping your equipment run longer and more efficiently.

Lubricant Information

Pyroshield® Syn Open Gear Grease (5182, 5180 & 5100)
Formulated for large, unshrouded open gears in mining, mineral processing, and cement operations. This heavy-duty synthetic grease provides strong wear protection, high load-carrying capacity, and excellent adhesion across a wide temperature range, performing reliably even at contact temperatures above 327°C (620°F).

Almasol Syntemp Lubricant (9901)
Engineered for large open gears, kiln girth gears, and high-temperature industrial applications. Provides durable protection for oven chains, sliding surfaces, and slow-moving friction bearings where reliable film strength is critical.

Pyroshield® Syn Hvy & XHvy Open Gear Lubricants (9000 & 9011)
Developed for large, shrouded open gears operating under high loads and shock conditions. These non-asphaltic synthetic fluids combine Almasol®, LE’s exclusive wear-reducing additive, with extreme-pressure chemistry for superior protection and reduced environmental impact.

Pyroshield® Syn Kiln Lubricant (9020)
Designed for slow-moving, high-temperature gear sets on kilns and ball mills. This heavy-duty synthetic fluid resists flaking and film breakdown, using a blend of fine graphite, Almasol®, and extreme-pressure additives for exceptional wear protection. Environmentally friendly and non-asphaltic.

Duolec® Industrial Gear Oil (1601-1610, 1302, 1304)
Formulated for enclosed industrial gear systems operating under heavy loads and high temperatures. Combines Duolec®, LE’s dual-acting wear-reducing additive, with extreme-pressure protection for long-lasting performance and thermal stability.

Syntemp® Synthetic Lubricant (9102)
Formulated for open gears, chains, cables, slides, and sealed bearings. This high-temperature, water-resistant spray grease provides strong film strength, rust protection, and extreme-pressure performance without melting or sling-off. Contains Monolec®, LE’s wear-reducing additive.
