Use of Moly Grease in Trucks

Recently, we have been running into companies that are using a grease containing moly (molybdenum disulfide) as chassis grease or general-purpose grease. This is more often seen when heavy equipment is also in the fleet and the fleet manager wants to have only one grease for all applications.


While moly is an excellent solid dry film additive often used and recommended by heavy equipment manufacturers; Molybdenum is a mineral, and while it has good lubrication properties for sliding surfaces such as bucket pins for example, it is not an additive you want in your grease when lubricating high speed rolling element bearings like those used in fans, nor in universal joints or throw out bearings and especially in slack adjusters. In fact, many automatic slack adjuster manufacturers specifically warn against using greases containing moly.


For instance, Haldex states; “Moly-disulfide grease should not be used because it may affect the function of the internal friction clutches and reduce the reliability of the automatic adjustment”.


Another manufacturer, TSE, has this statement in their manual: “Use of Molybdenum (MOLYBDENUM-DISULPHIDE) grease or oil is not recommended. Use of these will affect the adjustment function and void the warranty”.


Since brakes are involved, and the safety of your drivers and the public, it’s to your benefit to have this knowledge. Greases containing moly are not true general-purpose greases and should not be used as chassis grease.


For an exceptional chassis grease (as well as heavy equipment grease if a single product is desired) you can do no better than using Lubrication Engineers’ 3752-3750 Almagard® Vari-Purpose Lubricant.
